Chapter Six
Walsh grunted as he took yet another punch to his midsection. As he gasped and tried to get his breath back, he wondered, not for the first time, why he had ever thought that he could be a soldier. It was so painfully obvious that he wasn’t cut out for it.
Walsh swung his gloved right hand around and was shocked when he made contact, clipping the Wolf in the jaw. Then to his further shock, the Wolf teetered on his feet a few seconds before he dropped to the ground. Walsh took a couple of steps closer and was stunned to see that he’d actually knocked out his opponent.
Appalled by his actions, Walsh brought both hands to his guts. Oh boy, he’d really gone and fucked it up now. After all the fuckups he’d done in the past, this one was sure to push him over the edge.
“I’m so sor…” he began to say.
But he was cut off by a loud chorus of cheering from the rest of his team. Walsh was shocked that they weren’t ready to rip him apart. Sure, he’d seen plenty of the Wolves knock each other out in other sparring session, but Walsh was nothing but a Ferret. Surely, that had to piss the Wolves off.
Nico came over and patted Walsh on the shoulder. “That is your spar win. Good job.”
“Why aren’t the Wolves mad that I knocked out one of their own?”
“Because to them, you are just as good as a Wolf. They’re proud of you for finally getting a new skill. They’re your team, and teams always stick together.” Nico pointed down at the ground to the unconscious Wolf. “He’ll even be proud of you once his headache goes away.”
Walsh allowed himself a tiny smile. “So what I did was a good thing?”
“No, it was great thing. Now it means that you’re ready for the shooting range.”
“Does that mean I don’t have to spar anymore?” Walsh asked hopefully.
“No, you still get to do that first thing every morning.”
Well, crap. So Walsh still had to do his least favorite thing in life. Didn’t that just suck a duck? Thus was the story of Walsh. The worst part was Walsh was only two weeks into his training. The only time he ever got to see Tate was the occasional times that their meals happened to be on the same schedule. Which wasn’t nearly enough in Walsh’s book.
But this was what Walsh had asked for. So he shouldn’t be complaining. He knew that once his basic training was over and he was a real soldier, things would be much better. He would have more time to see Tate, he would be able to go out on missions, and better yet, nobody would ever be able to hurt him again.
When it was time to go to the shooting range, instead of staying back like he usually had, Walsh followed the rest of the group to the armory. Walsh was a bit overwhelmed when they gave him a gun with actual live rounds in it.
